A brief overview of the fifth day of our 6-day visit to these beautiful islands at the end of December 2019.

Day 5: Delimara Power Station, Il-Kalanka Bay, Fort Delimara, St. Peter's Pool, Marsaxlokk, St. Thomas Bay Beach, Valletta

We had a somewhat delayed start of the day and a mild hangover, we decided to visit the Southern part of Malta and drove in the direction of Marsaxlokk. We ventured out to a view point near Il-Kalanka Bay by taking a less than ideal road. On the way, we passed the Delimara Power Station on our right hand side and took a few photo's before we continued to the Il-Kalanka Bay. The fresh air from the sea gave us some energy for what seems to be a promising day.

After visiting the Il-Kalanka Bay we explored the nearby Delimara Fort. The fort was built between 1876 and 1888 by the British Empire. The main gate shows a date of 1881, but this is the date of completion of the gatehouse, not the commissioning of the fort. In 1956 the fort was stripped of the majority of its artillery. Soon after, the fort was abandoned for a considerable period, and in 1975 it was leased by the Government of Malta to a local farmer, who used it to raise pigs from 1982 to 2005. Which could be quite plausible as we had been surprised to have encountered a pig in the ditch below the fort.

We continued to St. Peters Pool, where we were once again greeted with crystal blue waters and amazing views. We took some photo's and drove off to Marsaxlokk for a decent seafood lunch while passing some challenging narrow streets on the way.

In Marsaxlokk we parked our car and wandered around before settling down at Roots restaurant to get a proper seafood lunch. The seafood platters and white wine from Gozo had taken about 2 hours of our time but worth every minute. We agreed to take some more pictures in Marsaxlokk before driving to St. Thomas Bay, where night quickly fell. I still managed to do some long exposure shots near the coast.

We drove back to Valletta and did a late night photo walking tour. We were looking for a good dinner spot but on the first day of the year most of the restaurants were closed. Luckily StrEat Whisky & Bistro was still open. We had some great burgers and salads there and went to our Airbnb to prepare for our last day tomorrow.
